A New Leash on Life - Graduation Ceremonies

Thanks to all who joined us as we celebrated the graduation of Storm, Buddy and Rex on Friday, June 19th at the Forsyth Correctional Center.

All who attended had an opportunity to meet the dogs, trainers and the adoptive familes as the doggies went to their new forever homes. The new T-shirts with the new NLOL logo were available to the public, and many guests supported the program by purchasing one! BIG thanks to talented artist Mike Urbowicz for his creativity and generosity in designing the new logo. His design won our contest, and we think it looks wonderful.

Again, thanks to everyone who attended and to all of those who support this program including the Forsyth Humane Society, the inmate-trainers, the Winston-Salem Dog training club members who have helped SO MUCH...

The Forsyth Humane Society and the North Carolina Department of Correction have partnered to bring A New Leash on Life to the minimum-security Forsyth Correctional Facility in Winston-Salem. Homeless dogs are paired with qualifying prisoners, and receive socialization, crate-training, basic obedience skills, and agility training.

Inmates must go through an extensive application process before being approved into the program. Qualifying inmates work with professional dog trainers, and learn positive-reinforcement training methods. For eight weeks, the dogs live and work with the inmate-trainers, sleeping in a special Doggie Dorm at night. After "graduating" from the program, the dogs are ready to become the newest member of an adoptive family, and another dog is teamed with an inmate trainer.

The first class of three dogs arrived at the Department of Correction on April 7, 2009. Buddy is an Shepherd/Airedale Terrier mix, Storm is a big and beautiful German Shepherd, and Rex is a hound mix, with an adoptive family eagerly awaiting his graduation.

A New Leash on Life offers both humans and canines a new chance, helping inmates become productive members of society, and offering dogs the necessary training to be welcome members of a family. Inmates get a sense of pride and self-esteem, and a marketable skill. Perhaps best of all, inmates learn patience and compassion, and both men and dogs learn how to give and receive unconditional love.

This program receives no state funding, and is dependent upon community donations. To find out more about this program, or to make a donation, please contact our Executive Director, Karen Braswell.

About the Forsyth Humane Society

The Forsyth Humane Society located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is a not-for-profit organization committed to preventing pet overpopulation by promoting responsible pet ownership and by providing for the welfare of homeless cats and dogs. Animals accepted into our Adoption Center are cared for until they find a new, loving home and a second chance for a happy life.

If you are willing to make a lifetime commitment to a pet, please visit our Adoption Center. If you already have a full house, please consider making a donation or volunteering your time to help us help the animals.

Houses for Hounds

Many dogs in our community are spending their nights unsheltered in windy and wet conditions.

We are making a plea to anyone who has a dog house that is not needed and in good condition, to donate it to the "Houses for Hounds" program, so that Animal Control can get it to a needy family. Monetary donations or donations of new houses are also gratefully being accepted.

There is an especially dire need for medium to large dog houses that can accommodate dogs 50 pounds or larger.

If you are able to help, please bring your dog house to the Forsyth County Animal Shelter at 5570 Sturmer Park Circle (near the corner of University Parkway and Shattalon Drive), or to the Forsyth Humane Society adoption center at 61 Miller Street.

Pet Oxygen Rescue Masks Donated!

Through a joint effort, Fur-Ever Friends (FF) and Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) have raised enough money to supply every Winston-Salem/Forsyth County fire truck with a 3-piece McCulloch Medical Animal Oxygen Mask set! Unlike traditional rescue masks, the McCulloch set contains three masks of different sizes to fit the faces of distressed animals from small birds to the largest family dog. Local fire-fighters will no longer have to struggle to make a human mask “fit” a family pet that is struggling to survive the toxic fumes of a house fire.

Through the non-profit group "H.E.L.P." (www.helpanimalsinc.org) FF and FHS have purchased 100 mask sets for a total cost of just over $5,500. This will provide 100 local paid and volunteer fire/rescue trucks with their own set so that the masks are available for immediate use.

Studies have shown that people will often risk their own lives to save their family pets from fire, and that they often are more traumatized by the loss of a beloved pet than they are of family heirlooms and their home. By providing all Forsyth County/Winston-Salem area fire-fighters with the McCulloch mask kits, we will be helping both the animals in need and their families.

Fur-Ever Friends and Forsyth Humane Society would like to thank the hundreds of people who donated to this worthy cause. Due to the overwhelming response from the public the entire cost of these 100 pet rescue mask sets has been raised.

FCSO Receives Protective Vests for Canines

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office proudly announces that its Canine Unit has received a generous donation of bulletproof/stab proof protective vests for its canines. These protective vests have been donated by Vest ‘N P.D.P. (Police Dog Protection), a non-profit organization that raises money to provide vests to police dogs.

The Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit is essential to protecting and preserving the safety and security of our community. Our Canine Unit consists of 10 dogs which are specially trained to detect explosives, drugs, firearms, and track and apprehend suspects. Law enforcement canines risk their own lives in the line of duty and are being injured and killed more frequently than ever. With the addition of these protective vests, our canines have a vital layer of protection while carrying out their daily duties.

Vest ‘N P.D.P. was created by Susie Jean in July of 2002 to raise funds to provide bulletproof/stab proof vest to law enforcement canine units to protect these animals from the dangers they encounter while serving and protecting communities. Through their work, Vest ‘n P.D.P. has outfitted over 200 police dogs in 24 states with protective vests. The protective vest is measured for each dog and takes 4-6 weeks to be made at a cost of $ 895.00. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made by visiting their website at www.vestnpdp.com.
