Heather hikes again for Forsyth Humane Society!

After completing the Appalachian Trail and raising $18,000 for FHS in 2007, Heather Kierstead is back on the trail. This time, Stephen Dunn joins Heather to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, over 2,600 miles from Mexico to Canada, with the goal of raising $26,600.

The Winston-Salem Foundation is administering their fund "BlinkLove", so donating is easy and secure. The donations are divided among 3 animal rescue charities: 40% to FHS, 40% to FurEver Friends & 20% to the national organization Best Friends. Learn more about the projects being supported by this fundraiser at blinklove.org, and, with a click on the "Give" button, get connected to the WSF donation page.

You can also keep track of their journey through videos and posts by clicking here to read their blog.

Please help FHS by helping Heather and Stephen reach their goal!

Party for Paws!

How about getting together for a good time with your friends and raising money for the FHS at the same time. Sounds like fun! This April we are asking Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) supporters to help us in raising much needed funds by inviting friends/family over for dinner, brunch, a cocktail party, an elegant dinner, afternoon tea or a casual get together—your choice. In return for your hospitality you will ask for donations to the FHS. You choose the date, the number of guests you want and the kind of occasion you prefer. You may want to ask  a friend or two to co-host with you. FHS will provide you with invitations for your event as well as FHS material for your guests. If the schedule allows and you wish, we may have a FHS representative speak to your gathering about our activities and needs.

All you have to do is let us know that you are willing to host by calling Mary Lea Bradford at  336-721-1303 Ext l02 and we will get  the invitations and materials to you. Please help us make April a great month for the animals and have fun at the same time!

New Leash on Life - Our FOURTH Graduating Class!

The Forsyth Humane Society and The North Carolina Department of Correction celebrated the FOURTH graduation ceremony for New Leash on Life - Rehabilitating Men and Dogs at 5:30 pm on Thursday on January 14th.

Everyone got to meet Autumn, Otis, Buddy and Boomer and the dedicated trainers who have been working hard to get them ready to be responsible canines with their new familes in their forever homes.

A New Leash on Life offers both humans and canines a new chance, helping inmates become productive members of society, and offering dogs the necessary training to be welcome members of a family. Inmates get a sense of pride and self-esteem, and a marketable skill. Perhaps best of all, inmates learn patience and compassion, and both men and dogs learn how to give and receive unconditional love.

Woof! Woof! Woofstock!

Thanks to EVERYONE who made our first-ever Woofstock at Tanglewood such a fun event!

It's been 40 years since the original Woodstock, and it's great to know that the GOOD VIBES live on! A good time was had by all on Sat. Aug. 29. Doggies and people moved and grooved to the fabulous music; enjoyed delicious eats; and generally had a great time.

A big WOOF and MEOW ("thanks" in human-talk) to everyone who helped...sponsors, volunteers, vendors, and friends. A HUGE SHOUTOUT to the Hideout (hideoutbar.net) who booked the music and handled the sound. We'll be seeing you guys at Hideout!

Our deepest thanks to our generous sponsors and musicians who took the leap of faith with us on this first Woofstock ever.

And remember...everything's for the animals. Funds raised go to help the animals-in-need in our community.

Didn't get a chance to come out? Click here to see what the Winston-Salem Journal had to say, or for those who are a little more visually oriented, here's how WXII captured the event.

A New Leash on Life - Graduation Ceremonies

Thanks to all who joined us as we celebrated the graduation of Storm, Buddy and Rex on Friday, June 19th at the Forsyth Correctional Center.

All who attended had an opportunity to meet the dogs, trainers and the adoptive familes as the doggies went to their new forever homes. The new T-shirts with the new NLOL logo were available to the public, and many guests supported the program by purchasing one! BIG thanks to talented artist Mike Urbowicz for his creativity and generosity in designing the new logo. His design won our contest, and we think it looks wonderful.

Again, thanks to everyone who attended and to all of those who support this program including the Forsyth Humane Society, the inmate-trainers, the Winston-Salem Dog training club members who have helped SO MUCH...

Please click here to see a video clip of the ceremonies from News 14 Carolina.

The Forsyth Humane Society and the North Carolina Department of Correction have partnered to bring A New Leash on Life to the minimum-security Forsyth Correctional Facility in Winston-Salem. Homeless dogs are paired with qualifying prisoners, and receive socialization, crate-training, basic obedience skills, and agility training.

Inmates must go through an extensive application process before being approved into the program. Qualifying inmates work with professional dog trainers, and learn positive-reinforcement training methods. For eight weeks, the dogs live and work with the inmate-trainers, sleeping in a special Doggie Dorm at night. After "graduating" from the program, the dogs are ready to become the newest member of an adoptive family, and another dog is teamed with an inmate trainer.

The first class of three dogs arrived at the Department of Correction on April 7, 2009. Buddy is an Shepherd/Airedale Terrier mix, Storm is a big and beautiful German Shepherd, and Rex is a hound mix, with an adoptive family eagerly awaiting his graduation.

This program receives no state funding, and is dependent upon community donations. To find out more about this program, or to make a donation, please contact Mary Lea Bradford.
