Studies have shown that when dogs are chained as a primary means of confinement, they are far more likely to be aggressive. Dogs are naturally social, and chaining isolates them, creating a situation where they become anxious, lonely, and territorial. You can help end the abuse. Just click here to download the petition and circulate it among your friends and co-workers. You can mail or fax the petitions to Fosyth County Animal Control (fax number and address for FCAC is included on the petition)
Beyond the lack of socialization, chaining endangers the health and physical well-being of dogs. Tethered dogs are often exposed to the extremes of weather without adequate shelter, food and water. Dogs in Forsyth County have suffered from frostbite, heat exposure, dehydration and death from exposure to the elements while chained. The neglect, isolation and abuse never ends. You can now be a voice for the voiceless victims of this cruel treatment. The Forsyth County Department of Animal Control is accepting your input on the tethering (chaining) of dogs as a primary means of confinement. These comments can be made via email or by phone. For more info, click here. You may comment on this proposal by sending an email to animalshelter@forsyth.cc or by calling 336.703.2438. Please find the time to respond to this issue—don't think someone else will do it. We all have to do our part if we want this to end. This public comment phase is the first step to Forsyth County becoming a progressive, chain free community. If we fail to have our voices heard on this issue, then the issue will not move forward. Party for Paws! How about getting together for a good time with your friends and raising money for the FHS at the same time. Sounds like fun! This April we are asking Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) supporters to help us in raising much needed funds by inviting friends/family over for dinner, brunch, a cocktail party, an elegant dinner, afternoon tea or a casual get together—your choice. In return for your hospitality you will ask for donations to the FHS. You choose the date, the number of guests you want and the kind of occasion you prefer. You may want to ask a friend or two to co-host with you. FHS will provide you with invitations for your event as well as FHS material for your guests. If the schedule allows and you wish, we may have a FHS representative speak to your gathering about our activities and needs. All you have to do is let us know that you are willing to host by calling Karen Braswell, Executive Director at 336-721-1303 Ext l05 and we will get the invitations and materials to you. Please help us make April a great month for the animals and have fun at the same time!
There is no better way to have a good time with your four legged friend and help a worthy cause, The Forsyth Humane
Society, than attending the 2nd Annual Woofstock Music Event on Saturday, May 15th. With great bands, family
friendly events and special canine cahoots, Woofstock will be the highlight of every dog's Spring.
Twin City Diner - FHS Benefit Days! Eat at the Twin City Diner on Tuesday April 27 and Wednesday April 28 and help the Forsyth Humane Society! Just click here to download the flyer. Print it out and present it to them when you go on the 27th and 28th and Twin City will donate 20% of the sales from your meal to FHS.
It's no secret... The Forsyth Humane Society depends solely on private donations and revenue generated from fund raisers to sustain our operations. Given the general state of the economy and the fact that neither Art Unleashed! nor the Furr Ball (our two major fund raisers) are scheduled for this year, we're looking at a significant shortfall in income. We've taken steps to reduce our operating expenses, and are looking at other ways to cut wherever we can. But it's difficult to do, especially without affecting the care and support we're able to provide for the cats and dogs (and people who love them) in our community. So once again, we're turning to you. We know you can do it. You've done it throughout the years, and the recent outpouring for Mercy (click here to read her story) proves that even in tough times, good people step up. We're asking you to donate whatever you can, but with a twist—through monthly recurring donations. Having a steady stream of regular donations would ease our burden so much. Just $20 a month from 500 people would be a great start to providing some much needed relief. That's only $5 a week. Of course, if you can give more, that would be really great. If you'd prefer to donate quarterly, yearly, or just make a one-time contribution, we're set up for those options too...and we'll appreciate it every bit as much. Be the first on your block to help us kick off our "Gimme Five" campaign and click here to donate now. For the kids out there—we need help naming the dog and cat that are our spokescritters for this new campaign. We're still figuring out all of the details and the prizes for a contest, so stay tuned for details! Art Unleashed! 2010
Please click here for details on Art Unleashed! 2010. FHS Needs YOU! Not only do we depend on your financial support, but we depend on your support as volunteers. We always need volunteers! Maybe you can give a couple hours a week to answer the phones, walk the dogs or help clean up. Maybe you have a friend family member or neighbor who is retired, loves animals and wants to get out a day or two each week. Let them know we'd love to have them come by to fill out a volunteer application and visit the animals. For more info on volunteer opportunities, please click here. To download our volunteer application, click here. TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES NEEDED! Do you have the time to foster a dog, cat, puppies or kittens for a short period of time (typically a week to a few months) while they await admission to our Adoption Center? We will take care of all medical and food needs, crates, and other supplies, but we greatly need some volunteers to help keep our furry friends safe for a short while. Some may be recuperating from a recent injury, or simply have no place else to go. If you are interested, please call 721-1303 and speak to Amber (ext. 103) or Pat (ext. 104). You can also email us at info@forsythhumane.org. An application form must be completed. You can download it by clicking here. THANKS! About the Forsyth Humane Society The Forsyth Humane Society located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is a not-for-profit organization committed to preventing pet overpopulation by promoting responsible pet ownership and by providing for the welfare of homeless cats and dogs. Animals accepted into our Adoption Center are cared for until they find a new, loving home and a second chance for a happy life. If you are willing to make a lifetime commitment to a pet, please visit our Adoption Center. If you already have a full house, please consider making a donation or volunteering your time to help us help the animals. Houses for Hounds Many dogs in our community are spending their nights unsheltered in cold, windy and snowy or wet conditions. We are making a plea to anyone who has a dog house that is not needed and in good condition, to donate it to the "Houses for Hounds" program, so that Animal Control can get it to a needy family. Monetary donations or donations of new houses are also gratefully being accepted. There is an especially dire need for medium to large dog houses that can accommodate dogs 50 pounds or larger. If you are able to help, please bring your dog house to the Forsyth County Animal Shelter at 5570 Sturmer Park Circle (near the corner of University Parkway and Shattalon Drive), or to the Forsyth Humane Society adoption center at 61 Miller Street. For more information, please call Keith Murphy at 336-784-8939.
FCSO Receives Protective Vests for Canines The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office proudly announces that its Canine Unit has received a generous donation of bulletproof/stab proof protective vests for its canines. These protective vests have been donated by Vest ‘N P.D.P. (Police Dog Protection), a non-profit organization that raises money to provide vests to police dogs. The Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit is essential to protecting and preserving the safety and security of our community. Our Canine Unit consists of 10 dogs which are specially trained to detect explosives, drugs, firearms, and track and apprehend suspects. Law enforcement canines risk their own lives in the line of duty and are being injured and killed more frequently than ever. With the addition of these protective vests, our canines have a vital layer of protection while carrying out their daily duties. Vest ‘N P.D.P. was created by Susie Jean in July of 2002 to raise funds to provide bulletproof/stab proof vest to law enforcement canine units to protect these animals from the dangers they encounter while serving and protecting communities. Through their work, Vest ‘n P.D.P. has outfitted over 200 police dogs in 24 states with protective vests. The protective vest is measured for each dog and takes 4-6 weeks to be made at a cost of $ 895.00. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made by visiting their website at www.vestnpdp.com.
